WE’LL TAKE YOU THROUGH ALL THE OPTIONS

You can jump to any section below:

1
why choose curtain poles over curtain tracks?

Poles and tracks both essentially provide the same function of opening and closing your curtains, however they are also very different. For example, tracks are generally located behind the curtain heading and out of sight which is a good if you're just looking for a functional solution.

Curtain poles on the other hand are much more visible and can be a charming decorative feature in their own right, you can choose from a huge range of different materials, colours, and sizes, which is great, especially if you’ve already picked out your curtain fabric and need a pole and finial that complements it perfectly. Curtain poles also have the added advantage of being compatible with virtually all curtain heading types, please see below:

  • Eyelet - Pole Only
  • Tab Top - Pole Only
  • Pencil Pleat - Track or Pole
  • Wave Pleat - Silent Gliss Only
  • Triple Pinch Pleat - Track or Pole
  • Double Pinch Pleat - Track or Pole

2
choosing wooden curtain poles

Wooden curtain poles are a great choice if you're looking for a more traditional or classical look, they’re typically made from oak, pine, and rosewood, and most commonly supplied with a varnished or stained finish that will let the natural wood grain to shine through. Wooden poles are also available in a wide variety of different colour finishes, which is ideal if you have a certain colour scheme and don’t want the hassle of having to paint over the existing wood.

If you have heavy weighted curtains it's worth considering a wooden curtain pole as they are generally made from solid wood, as opposed to metal poles which are mostly hollow at the centre, making them durable enough to hold up heavier lined fabrics and significantly reduce the risk of bowing.

Our wooden poles are available in the following colours:

  • Linen White
  • Cream
  • French Grey
  • Cafe Latte
  • Stone
  • Truffle
  • Pale Slate
  • Light Oak
  • Oak
  • Dark Oak
  • Rosewood
  • Black

3
choosing metal curtain poles

Metal curtain poles are very popular in contemporary decors offering a crisp and modern feel to a room. A great way of creating a lovely uniform look is to match them with other metallic surfaces in your room such as light fixtures, and doorknobs. If you have a small room, metal curtain poles can also help make the space feel roomier and brighter with their light-reflecting qualities.

Metal curtain poles are the best option if you have eyelet headed curtains as they will allow the metal ring eyelets to glide along the pole with minimal friction which is not the case with wooden poles. It’s worth bearing in mind that although metal poles can accommodate virtually all types of curtain headings, try to avoid using them with heavy weight curtains as they tend to buckle under the strain.

Our metal poles are available in the following finishes:

  • Chrome
  • Stainless Steel
  • Spun Brass
  • Black Nickle

4
choosing curtain pole finials

Curtain finials, or curtain pole ends, are a practical yet decorative addition to your pole. Their main purpose is to prevent the curtain, and its rings, from sliding off the pole and onto the floor, but they can also add a great deal of style and sophistication to your curtain pole, and decor as a whole.

Choosing the right finial can often dictate the colour, style, and material of your curtain pole as most are supplied as a complete set. Wooden finials are perfect for traditional or country-style homes, whereas metal ones look great in contemporary and modern interiors. You can even inject some extra glamour and chic into your decor with glass or crystal fittings which are available in a wide variety of different shapes and sizes.

Our curtain pole finials are available in the following materials:

  • Wood
  • Chrome
  • Brass
  • Nickle
  • Glass
  • Crystal

curtain pole measuring guide

Now that you've chosen the perfect pole and finials for your curtains, it's time to measure up.

To ensure that your curtains fit correctly, and also have enough space to neatly frame the window when pulled open, it's very important to take accurate curtain pole measurements.

You’ll need the following items before you begin:

  • Metal tape measure
  • Pen or pencil
  • Paper

Step 1 - Take the width measurement (X) of the window recess.

Step 2 -  Multiply measurement (Y) by two and add it to the window width measurement (X). For an average window size, we recommend allowing between 15 - 20 cm for measurement (Y). Please refer to the size guide table below for more information.

Window recess dimension (X) Please add the figure below to either side of (X)
100 cm (39”) 15 cm (6”)
180 cm (71”) 20 cm (8”)
240 cm (95”) 25 cm (10”)
360 cm (142”) 35 cm (14”)
480 cm (189”) 45 cm (18”)
600 cm (237”) 52 cm (21”)

Step 3 - The combined lengths you have calculated from Step 1 & 2 will be the required curtain pole length (not including the finials) as shown above. We supply our curtain poles in standard lengths, so if your required size differs from the lengths available, we would recommend ordering the next size up.

curtain pole fitting guide

Now that you’ve received your gorgeous curtain pole and finials from us, we’ll show you how to fit them.

We recommend the following items before you start:

  • Metal tape measure
  • Pencil
  • Stepladder (make sure you are on a stable platform)
  • Screwdriver
  • Electric drill (ideally cordless with hammer function)
  • Spirit level (horizontal and vertical type)

POSITIONING YOUR CURTAIN POLE BRACKETS

Step 1 - If you are fitting a new pole and have not yet ordered your curtains we recommend positioning the bracket 5 cm - 10 cm above the window recess, however, you may want to adjust this slightly depending on your ceiling height. The height of your pole is generally the starting point to determine what your curtain drop will be. If you haven't ordered your curtains yet and need more information on curtain drop measurements, please see our curtain measuring guide.

Step 2 - Position the bracket as shown above and check it’s level by placing your spirit level (in the vertical position) against the side of the bracket. Use your pencil to mark out the drill holes and repeat the process on the other side, if you have a long curtain pole a central bracket may be required.

FITTING YOUR CURTAIN POLE BRACKETS

Step 1 - Drill the holes you have previously marked out and make sure the correct diameter masonry bit is used, this information should be included with your curtain pole instructions.

Step 2 - Insert the correct size rawl plugs into the drilled holes and use a screwdriver to securely fix your bracket onto the wall with the screws provided, repeat this process on the other side.

FITTING YOUR CURTAIN POLE

Step 1 - Before fitting the curtain pole you’ll need to slide the required number of rings onto the pole and leave one ring on each end between the finials and brackets.

Step 2 - Place your pole onto the mounting brackets and use your tape measure to make sure that it's centred by leaving an equal amount of pole producing from each bracket.

Step 3 - Use the bracket screws provided to secure the pole in place.

Step 4 - Fit the end finials and secure them with the screws provided, remembering to leave one curtain ring between the bracket and finial.
